Overview

What makes it worth it

The Murray® MT200 42 in. riding lawn tractor is the hydrostatic step up from the gear-drive MT100 for homeowners who want the smoothness of pedal-controlled drive without paying V-twin money. Under the hood is a 540cc Briggs & Stratton® EX1900 Series™ single-cylinder producing a full 19.0 gross HP with turn-key electric start, an AVS® anti-vibration engine mount system, and a translucent 1.4-gal fuel tank. Power runs through a foot-pedal automatic hydrostatic transaxle — no shifting, no clutch, just push the pedal for a smooth 0-to-5.5 mph forward and let up to slow. The 42-in. stamped 13-gauge steel deck runs twin blades with anti-scalp gauge wheels and adjusts across 6 cutting positions from 1.5 in. to 4 in. via a single lever. Mow-in-Reverse lets you back into corners without stopping the blades, and the tight 18-in. turning radius trims cleanly around trees, beds, and mailboxes. Comfort is handled by a 13-in. padded high-back seat with built-in cup holder, and safety by a standard operator-presence system with headlights for early-morning or evening cuts. Backed by Murray's 2-year limited residential warranty. Ships direct from The Home Depot fully assembled — ideal for flat to gently rolling yards up to 2 acres.

The hydro pedal is the reason I upgraded from the MT100

I owned the gear-drive MT100 for two seasons. Good tractor, but shifting between speeds got old. Traded up to the MT200 and the foot-pedal hydro is a night-and-day difference — push to go, let up to slow, no thinking. 19 HP EX1900 has plenty of power for my 1.5 acres. Should have bought this one first.

Great value for a hydro at this price

Under $1,800 for a 19 HP hydrostatic tractor with a 42-in twin-blade deck is hard to beat. I looked hard at the Cub Cadet XT1 and the John Deere S100 — MT200 gave me the hydro pedals AND the bigger engine for less money. My flat 1.8 acres is done in about an hour.

540cc EX1900 pulls the twin-blade deck through wet grass

Cut after a week of rain at 3 inches, no bogging, no clumping. 19 HP is a real 19 HP — this engine doesn't feel like the marketing HP some tractors advertise. Twin blades leave a clean stripe.

AVS mounts make this way smoother than my last tractor

Rode a friend's older 19 HP single-cylinder and it vibrated my teeth loose. The MT200 with AVS mounts is genuinely smooth — noticeably less buzz through the steering wheel and the seat. Long mow sessions are way less fatiguing.

Solid hydro tractor — 6 deck positions is a little limiting

Everything about the drive and engine is excellent. Only knock is the deck only offers 6 height positions vs the 13 on the MT100 or the John Deere. Fine for most people but if you like fine-tuning your cut height you'll notice. Otherwise no complaints for the price.

Handles my rolling yard without dropping RPM

My yard is not flat. The MT200's 19 HP holds RPM going up my back slope where my old 13.5 HP would lug. Hydro pedal makes the hills easier too — you naturally modulate ground speed as the grade changes. Very happy.

Chews through St. Augustine with room to spare

St. Augustine is thick and matted. Set the deck at 3.5 in., blades sharp, 19 HP doesn't blink. Twin blades leave a great finish. If you're in the South and dealing with warm-season turf, get the 19 HP, don't cheap out on the 13.5.

18-in turning radius is not marketing fluff

I've had tractors that claim tight turning and lie about it. This one really does spin in an 18-in radius. Trimming around my mailbox and around trees takes almost no extra passes. Big quality-of-life win for a busy yard.

Great tractor for the money

It's not a V-twin Cub Cadet but it's also $700 less. For a flat to gently rolling 1.5-acre yard the MT200 is all the tractor most people need. Only reason for 4 stars — I wish it had cruise control.

Assembled at Home Depot, delivered ready to mow

Bought it at HD, they assembled it and delivered it fully gassed. Rolled off the trailer and I was on my yard 10 minutes later. Cut is even, tractor is quieter than my old B&S single, and my 1.3 acres is done in about 45 minutes.

Foot pedal hydro is a game changer

Never owned a hydro before. First 5 minutes on the pedal and I understood the hype. No shifting to plan around, no clutch to time. Just push and steer. Wife picked it up in 5 minutes and now mows with me.

Handles my rolling yard fine

My yard isn't flat but it isn't a mountain either. The MT200 has no trouble on the slopes I've got, engine stays strong, blades stay engaged. Very happy for the price.

Excellent value — minor gripe on the parking brake

Tractor is exactly what I needed for my 1.5-acre lot. Only gripe is the parking brake pedal is a little stiff at first and takes some getting used to. Otherwise no complaints. Way better than the used Craftsman I was going to buy.

Great-looking tractor and it cuts great

The black and orange looks sharp — doesn't look like a boring beige tractor. More importantly it starts every time and my flat Florida yard is done in about 40 minutes at wide-open throttle. Twin blades leave a great finish.

Second season, still going strong

About 45 hours on it now — no issues. Changed the oil and sharpened blades at 25 hours, that's the extent of maintenance. Belt still looks new. For an under-$1,800 hydrostatic tractor this thing has been rock solid.

Great starter hydrostatic tractor

We have 1.75 acres of yard around the house. MT200 handles it fine at position 4 on the deck. Only note — 4-in max cut height is a little low for the drought weeks when I want to leave the grass tall. Fine for a normal season, just be aware if you like a super-tall cut.

Briggs EX1900 has been bulletproof

This is my third Briggs-powered tractor in 25 years and honestly, the EX-series singles are just workhorses. Starts every time, sips fuel, and the AVS mounts make this one smoother than the last one I had. Very happy.
