Welded tubular-steel frame for a solid, long-life chassis
Overview
What makes it worth it
The Cub Cadet® Ultima® Z2 46 is Cub Cadet's step-up residential zero-turn — the ZT1 platform, upgraded with a commercial-grade Kawasaki® FR-Series V-twin, cast-iron front axle, and a heavier operator station for property owners who mow 1.5 to 4 acres and want the machine to keep up. Under the hood, a 21.5 HP (726cc) Kawasaki® FR651V V-twin OHV engine delivers commercial-duty power with full-pressure lubrication, replaceable spin-on oil filter, and heavy-duty canister air cleaner — the same engine family Cub Cadet uses on its commercial ProZ line. The 46-in. AeroForce™ fabricated deck is deep, rigid, welded 11-gauge steel with twin blades and a signature air-flow shell that delivers a cleaner cut, better dispersion, and less clumping on wet grass than a stamped deck. 12 cutting-height positions from 1 in. to 4.5 in. with single-lever adjustment, deck wash port, and mulch-/bagger-capable with optional kits. Dual EZT2200 hydrostatic transaxles drive independently for true zero-turn maneuverability — 0–7 mph forward, 0–3.5 mph reverse, and a zero-inch turning radius. Steering comes through ergonomic dual-lever controls with dampers for smooth, forgiving inputs. Comfort is the story on the operator platform: 18-in. high-back cut-and-sew seat with adjustable armrests, thick foam, wide slider, rubber-mounted foot platform to absorb vibration, LED headlights for dawn and dusk mowing, and a large 3.5-gal fuel tank so you refuel less often. A welded tubular-steel frame and cast-iron front axle carry the load on rough ground, and the machine sits on 11 x 4-5 pneumatic front casters and 18 x 8.5-8 rear drive tires. Standard operator-presence system, hour meter, and 12V charging port. Backed by Cub Cadet's industry-leading 4-year unlimited-hour residential limited warranty. Ships fully assembled with free curbside delivery from The Home Depot.

Kawasaki FR is the reason to buy this over the ZT1
I already had the ZT1 46 for four years — great machine. Upgraded to the Z2 46 mostly for the Kawasaki FR651V and cast-iron front axle. The FR is smoother, quieter, and holds RPM in tall grass better than the Kohler on the ZT1. Same great AeroForce deck, more mower underneath.

AeroForce fab deck cuts like a commercial
Coming from a stamped 46-in deck, the AeroForce is a different animal. Deeper shell, better vacuum, throws clippings clean out the side even on wet grass. No clumping, no double-cut. Lawn looks striped without a roller.

18-in seat with armrests is worth the upgrade
The seat on the Z2 is a huge step up from the ZT1. High back, real cut-and-sew, adjustable armrests, and the rubber-mounted foot platform kills vibration. I did a 2.5-hour mow and stepped off feeling fine. LED lights are bright and actually useful at dusk.

Cast-iron axle and tubular frame feel commercial
Picked the Z2 over the John Deere Z315E for the cast-iron front axle, Kawasaki engine, and 4-year unlimited-hour warranty. On my rooty rural yard the axle takes hits the aluminum ones would have bent. Feels like it will last a very long time.

7 mph and 46-in deck is the sweet spot
46-in deck is the right size for gates and trim work, 7 mph turns 2 acres into a 45-minute mow. Kawasaki drinks less gas than I expected — the 3.5-gal tank goes almost 3.5 hours of steady mowing.

First zero-turn, learned it in one tank
Dual levers were intimidating on the test drive. By the end of the first tank I was trimming beds and doing K-turns like I'd owned one for years. Cub Cadet's steering dampers make the levers forgiving — small inputs don't send you sideways.

Excellent — wish it had suspension seat standard
Only nitpick — at this price the ZS-series suspension platform would be nice. The rubber-mounted foot platform helps a lot but on rough ground you feel it. Everything else is perfect. Cut, engine, warranty, build — all top-tier.

4-year unlimited-hour warranty sold me
Every competitor in this class is 3 years / 300 hours or less. Cub Cadet is 4 years unlimited on the mower and 3 years on the Kawasaki. That is a huge tell about how they view the build quality. Machine has lived up to it so far.

Bermuda at 2 inches, no scalping
I keep Bermuda at 2 in. Any deck flex and I get scalping on my rolling front yard. The AeroForce fab deck is stiff enough that I don't scalp anywhere — clean, even cut across the whole property.

Delivered fully assembled and gassed
Home Depot delivered on the scheduled day, driver unloaded and rolled it up my drive, gas already in the tank. Fired on the first turn of the key. Registered warranty on the Cub Cadet app in 2 minutes. Painless.

Handles 15° slopes without drama
Part of my yard is a real slope. Dual EZT2200s hold speed downhill, no runaway. Cast-iron axle and low center of gravity make it feel planted. Feels safer on hills than the Ariens IKON I test-drove.

Kawasaki FR starts every time
Cold morning, hot afternoon, doesn't matter. Half a turn of the key and the FR fires. Auto-choke works exactly as advertised. Big upgrade from the pull-start B&S on my old walk-behind.

Great — deck belt cover clip is fiddly
Only complaint — the plastic clip holding the deck belt cover is fiddly to reseat. Wish it was a metal thumb-latch. Belt itself looks fine at 40 hours. Everything else is stellar.

St. Augustine at 3.5 in, looks like a putting green
Thick St. Augustine used to lug my old tractor. Kawasaki FR doesn't even notice it. AeroForce deck lays it down clean and even. Neighbors have asked what mower I switched to.

Second season, zero issues
About 70 hours in. Oil, filter, blade sharpen — done. Belts look new, deck is straight, engine runs like day one. This is a keeper for the next decade at least.

LED headlights make dawn mowing possible
In summer I like to mow before the heat. The LED headlights are bright enough to actually see the grass line at 6 a.m., not just to be legal. Underrated feature.

Fits through my 48-in gate
Measured the 46-in Z2 carefully — it clears my 48-in back gate with about an inch on each side. That was the deciding factor over the Z2 54. Same premium build, right size for my property.
